Why the change from Now Called OCIA?

Why the Change from R.C.I.A to O.C.I A

This change help the language more closely align with the original Latin, according St. John Paul II's 2001 translation guidelines. In 2002, Pope John Paul II issued new guidelines for translating ritual books from Latin into other languages.

We than look at the Latin text from OCIA ritual order book, ordo initiationis christianae adultorumWhen was originally translated into English in 1972, the word ordo was translate das rite. In the new English translation, based in the 2001 guidelines, the word order is more accurate translation of the Latin. Therefore, RCIA (The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults) is OCIA (The Order of Christian Initiation of Adults).

This more accurate translation also helps to foster the idea that the Order of Christian Initiation of Adults is not one rite or one process. It reflects that it is a journey of walking alongside people discerning Catholicism withing the teachings and Liturgical seasons of the Faith. It is a reminder that we are a lifelong journey to follow Christ and His Church resulting in a continual conversion of heart. Your task is to develop your faith: Get to know Christ; Develop a prayer life; Participate in the Liturgy; Know how Christians live. Our purpose is to give you the tools to make an informed decision about entering the Catholic Church.

Simply put, fall in love with Jesus so that you may grow more deeply in discipleship!

Period of Evangelization and Precatechumenate this period has no fixed duration or structure; for inquiry and introduction to Gospel values, this is an opportunity to begin an awareness of faith.

1st step: Acceptance into the Order of Catechumens: This is a liturgical rite, usually celebrated annually.

The Catechumen period is a duration corresponding to the progress and growth of the individual. Nurturing one's faith and conversion to God.

2nd step: Election or Enrollment of names:

Celebrated annually during the first weekend of Lent. This step demonstrates readiness for the sacraments of initiation.

The period of Purification and Enlightenment is a time of reflection and is centered on conversion marked by the celebration of Scrutinies and presentations of Rites.

3rd step: Celebration of the Sacraments of Initiation celebrated at Easter Vigil by which the elect are initiated through baptism, Confirmation, and Holy Eucharist.

Period of Postbaptismal Catechesis or Mystagogy This period follows the Easter Vigil and allows the newly initiated to share their experience and responsibilities as full members of the Church.
